How-to use Dandelion seeds to create a beautiful Print

My newest collection features a print called the Dandelion Wishes Print. I thought I’d give you a look at the process I went through in designing the repeat image, ready to be printed onto the fabric.

I started out by taking some dandelions from my back yard and placing the seeds on some coloured paper. I tried multiple different colours, but decided on blue.

I ended up using a macro lens on the camera to capture the image. I wanted close up details of the seeds to be able to create an unusual scale.

Once I had the photo, it was time to play around in Photoshop to create a repeat image that can be printed seamlessly down the length of the fabric. This step was quite time consuming and fiddly as I didn’t want to mirror the image like I normally do.

Then I put the print image on a dress drawing to check the scale before it was sent to the printer!

And finally, the first piece of the print in Bamboo has arrived. I can’t wait to get started. The next step is to pattern make the new designs, make a sample of each design in the collection and do the photoshoot!

Creating the prints is my favourite part of the process. I hope this gives you some insight in to how I create each print.

xoxo Yumi

This is the Kyoto Bloom fabric in the Turtle Neck Dess style. As she’s petite, I shortened the length to suit her perfectly.

One of the things I love about making dresses in small runs is being able to offer little customisations like this.

Thank you Melinda for sharing your photo and for your lovely message:
